Hamm’s Beer Offering Reward to Owner of Hidden WA Library Stash

A week after a stash of historic Hamm’s beer and stale Godzilla Heads Chewing Gum were found in a Washington state public library, Hamm’s beer is asking the guilty culprit to step forward…and claim their reward!

On August 12, the City of Walla Walla Government took to Facebook to share a shocking find that had recently been made at the Walla Walla Public Library:

With the Walla Walla Public Library closed to the public, staff have been changing its layout to better serve patrons when it reopens. While moving the mystery collection to a more accessible place, a Facilities crew member uncovered a real-life whodunit when he removed a corner panel on some 1970s-era shelving with an open top.

That “real life whodunit” was a hidden stash of five unopened cans of Hamm’s beer and a stale package of Godzilla Heads chewing gum! “Someone had apparently taken a cue from ‘Treasure Island’ and stashed their booty behind the shelving, but then wasn’t able to retrieve it,” the City of Walla Walla guesses.

Godzilla Heads gum dates to the late 1980s, and the rule that requires warnings to be printed on alcohol containers was enacted in November 1988. So we think the goods were there for upward of 30 years. Talk about a long shelf life!

The City concluded the Facebook post by assuring that the beer and gum found a new home — the Subury Landfill, as it turned out, to the dismay of many. “The Hamm’s is a collectors item and could be worth money,” pointed out many in the post’s comment section, “especially unopened. That money could be donated to the library.”

It’s been a week since the cache was discovered, and — just when it seemed that the case would go unsolved and the guilty culprit’s identity would forever remain a mystery — Hamm’s has offered up a reward to the person who comes forward and takes claim of the hidden stash.

“Did you hear about the Hamm’s stash that’s been hiding in a Washington library since the 1980s?” the historic beer brand posted on Facebook. “We’re on a mission to find the owner. Prove that the 30-year-old Hamm’s were yours and there might be a special surprise in it for you.”

That special surprise, as it turns out, is no small prize at all but a gift card for 30 cases of Hamm’s beer — one case for every year the sneaky library patron has been missing out on their secret cache! Hamm’s is asking the bashful boozer to message directly with proof on Facebook or Instagram.

Hamm’s was proudly born in the Land of Sky Blue Waters (aka Minnesota) in 1865. While ownership has changed hands over the decades, parts of the original brewery still stand in St. Paul. Today, St. Paul Brewing currently resides and brews in the historic space.
