On a recent Thursday night whim, we took a drive out to Annandale, MN to try Spilled Grain Brewhouse. A little out of the way, it was well-worth the 30-minute country-road trip!
Conveniently located right off Highway 55, Spilled Grain is nearly impossible to miss. Big signs and plenty of lights make it easily visible, and we pulled in ooh-ing and ahh-ing over the cute farmhouse aesthetics. A patio out front with strands of hanging lights had us wishing for warmer weather as we stepped out of our vehicle into the frigid Minnesota night.

We stepped inside to find it as appealing on the interior as the exterior. Spacious, rustic and comfortable, we immediately felt at home and certain that this would be a place we’d like to frequent. The Minnesota Wild game played on a large screen projected against one wall. Games and restrooms were available to the left while a wide variety of merch for sale lined the wall to our right. As we approached the bar, I could also see a wall boasting old Annandale athletic gear, a neat tribute to the small but tight-knit community.

With 14 beers plus a craft rootbeer on tap, we had an impressive selection to choose from. Katie – tending to favor lighter and fruity beers – ordered a colorful 4-drink fight: Highest Point IPA, Lake Series: Lake Sylvia (strawberry wheat), Raspberry Red (fruit beer) and Nitro: Steelcut (oatmeal stout). I tend to like maltier beers myself and also opted forย a flight: Bungalow Island (American Stout), Krooked Rafter (Kolsch), Bearded Man (old ale) and Eve’s Forbidden Fruit (cider). While everything we tried was fantastic, the Bungalow Island and Lake Sylvia are worth highlighting. The Bungalow was a fantastically flavorful stout while Lake Sylvia – for someone who doesn’t typically like a hoppy or fruit beer – was absolutely incredible!

There weren’t many patrons this particular night, which allowed us some time to chat with Anastacia, who was working behind the bar and also manages events and marketing. Very friendly and warm, she invited us back for chili every NFL Sunday!
